AD 39 Special Election: April 2018

January 2018 – On April 3rd, there will be a special primary election held for the 39th Assembly District, to fill the unexpired term of former Assemblyman Raul Bocanegra who stepped down from office following disclosure of a sexual harassment settlement.  The term will expire in December 2018.

The primarily Latino district, rests on the east side of the San Fernando valley north of Burbank. In 2016, the presidential vote in the area supported 74.6% of its vote to Clinton (D), and on 19.8% of its vote to Trump.  In 2014, 69.8% of the vote went to re-elect Jerry Brown (D), while 30.2% went to Neil Kashkari (R ). Party registration break-down in the district: Democrat – 52.94%, Republican 15.13%, while 27% are declared as Non-Partisan.

Currently, there are ten candidates filed to run in this seat.  Of these eight are Democrats and two are Republicans.  The filed candidates include eight Democrats:

  • Yolie Anguiano (San Fernando)
  • Bonnie Corwin (Sylmar)
  • Richard Flores (home not listed)
  • Jaime Herrera (Sylmar)
  • Jaime Lazo (San Fernando)
  • Patty Lopez (Long Beach)
  • Martha “Marlin” Medrano (San Fernando)
  • Luz Maria Rivas (N. Hollywood)

And two Republicans:

  • Ricardo Antonio Benitez (Sylmar)
  • Robert Payne (Los Angeles)

The general, if necessary, is scheduled for June 5, 2018.
